Located in the heart of Maharashtra, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is one of central India’s most celebrated wilderness destinations and a remarkable landscape for photographing the Royal Bengal Tiger. Known for its dry deciduous forests, bamboo thickets, open meadows and water bodies, Tadoba offers an intimate and often dramatic setting for wildlife photography. The reserve takes its name from Tadoba Lake, which is associated with the local legend of Taru, a tribal chief who is believed to have been transformed into the deity Tadoba. The Andhari River, which flows through the reserve, gives the second part of its name. Tadoba National Park was established in 1955, while the adjoining Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1986. The two were brought together to form the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in 1995 under Project Tiger.

What makes Tadoba particularly distinctive is its landscape. The forest is dominated by dry deciduous vegetation, with teak, bamboo and other mixed woodland interspersed with open grasslands, rocky terrain and seasonal streams. Tadoba Lake and several other water bodies become important sources of water during the hot summer months and attract a wide variety of wildlife. The reserve is especially renowned for its Royal Bengal Tigers. Tadoba’s relatively open forest, numerous water sources and extensive network of safari tracks can provide excellent opportunities to observe tigers in their natural surroundings. The landscape also offers the possibility of seeing tigers using the forest edge, grasslands and waterholes, creating some spectacular photographic settings.Tadoba is not only about tigers. The reserve supports a rich diversity of mammals including Leopard, Dhole, Sloth Bear, Gaur, Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, Wild Boar and the Four-horned Antelope. Sloth Bears are particularly interesting subjects for photographers, and sightings of these elusive animals moving through the dry forest can be memorable.

The forest is also home to a remarkable variety of birds. Raptors, owls, peafowl, eagles, kingfishers and numerous woodland species can be encountered across the reserve, making Tadoba an excellent destination for photographers interested in both mammals and avifauna. One of Tadoba’s defining characteristics is the dramatic transformation of the landscape through the seasons. The forest becomes increasingly dry and open towards the summer, with animals concentrating around the remaining water sources. The golden grasses, dry teak forest and intense light can create striking photographic conditions, while the monsoon brings an entirely different character to the landscape. For wildlife photographers, Tadoba offers a combination of tiger-focused photography and varied forest experiences. The contrast between dense bamboo, open meadows, dry woodland and water bodies provides a constantly changing backdrop. A tiger walking through golden grass, a Sloth Bear crossing a forest track, a Gaur herd emerging from the bamboo or a raptor perched against the morning sky can each offer compelling photographic opportunities.

We will be exploring this remarkable wilderness through immersive full-day safaris, allowing ample time to move through different habitats, spend longer periods observing wildlife behaviour and make the most of the exceptional photographic opportunities that Tadoba has to offer.
