Situated in the Vindhyan hill ranges of Madhya Pradesh, Panna is one of India’s most beautiful and unique tiger reserves. Known for its dramatic landscapes, open woodlands, river systems and thriving wildlife, Panna offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography. While every forest has its own personality, Panna stands apart for its striking combination of forests, cliffs, grasslands and the lifeline of the reserve – the Ken River.

Panna Tiger Reserve was declared a National Park in 1981 and later became a part of Project Tiger in 1994. Spread across the Panna and Chhatarpur districts of Madhya Pradesh, this forest is globally recognized as one of the most successful stories of wildlife conservation. Following a severe decline in tiger numbers, an ambitious tiger reintroduction programme was initiated in 2009, transforming Panna into one of India’s finest tiger habitats today.

The reserve derives its name from the historic town of Panna, once renowned for its diamond mines, and is deeply connected with the cultural heritage of Bundelkhand. The landscape of Panna is shaped by ancient Vindhyan rock formations, steep escarpments, plateaus, gorges and valleys, giving the forest a distinct character unlike any other tiger reserve in India.

Flowing gracefully through the heart of the reserve is the Ken River, one of the cleanest rivers in central India. The river creates spectacular photographic settings with rocky riverbeds, dense riparian vegetation and tranquil pools. Along its course lies the scenic Raneh Falls canyon and the famous Pandav Falls, places associated with local legends and history. The river and its tributaries support an abundance of wildlife and attract numerous birds and mammals throughout the year.

Panna’s forests are primarily composed of Teak, Kardhai, Tendu, Mahua and mixed dry deciduous vegetation, interspersed with open grasslands and rocky plateaus. This diversity of habitats supports an impressive variety of wildlife. Tigers move gracefully through riverbanks, grasslands and forest trails, often creating stunning photographic opportunities in beautiful natural settings.

Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, Panna is home to Leopards, Sloth Bears, Indian Wolves, Striped Hyenas, Wild Dogs, Chital, Sambar, Nilgai, Chinkara and the Four-horned Antelope or Chousingha. The reserve also supports one of the most important populations of the critically endangered Indian Vulture, with species such as the Long-billed and White-rumped Vultures nesting along the rocky cliffs.

One of Panna’s greatest conservation achievements has been the successful reintroduction of the Gharial into the Ken River. These ancient reptiles can often be seen basking along the riverbanks, adding another unique subject for wildlife photographers.

Covering approximately 1,600 sq km, including its core and buffer zones, Panna Tiger Reserve supports more than 40 species of mammals and over 300 species of birds, making it an excellent destination not only for tiger photography but also for birding, landscapes and diverse wildlife experiences.

The varied terrain, magnificent river systems, dramatic cliffs and rich wildlife make Panna one of the most scenic and rewarding forests for wildlife photography in India.

We will be exploring this remarkable forest on two full-day safaris.
